It’s official. Our Kona Maragogype is among “the most exciting coffees” published by Coffee Review in 2013.

Coffee Review – the Wine Spectator of specialty coffee – has evaluated roasted beans since 1997. The criteria for its Top 30 Coffees of 2013: quality, value and “a ranking of other factors that include distinctiveness of style, uniqueness of origin or tree variety, certification, and general rarity.”

Maragogype is one of the rarest Hawaiian coffees, so we’re delighted to see our version on Coffee Review’s list. Why it’s so unusual: This variety yields about half the beans as the more common Typica, so few Kona farmers plant it. We're grateful for the ones who do.

Maragogype (also known as Maragogipe) has the largest beans of any Coffea arabica cultivar. A bean can stretch across the diameter of a penny. Its large size and low density makes it tricky to roast, but with the right profile, it's a beautiful coffee.

From Ken Davids of Coffee Review:

"Spectacular and juicy. The aroma starts quietly: orange, flowers, honey, a crisp hint of juniper. Round, sweet, brilliantly lively acidity; lightly syrupy mouthfeel. In the cup lavish honey, orange, lychee, rose-like flowers, and a smoothing hint of chocolate. Rose and lychee in particular carry into a refreshing, resonant finish....This is an exceptional Maragogipe, the most exciting and vivid in cup character I have ever sampled."

It was a tiny lot, with enough coffee for about 50 pounds of roasted beans. This season, we hope to offer more Maragogype made with the honey (or pulped-natural) process. As Davids explains, "the skin was removed from the coffee fruit immediately after picking but the beans or seeds were dried with at least some of the fruit pulp or 'honey' still adhering to them."
